A Document
I recently updated the photo banner on my weddings home page. This image is part of it:
It is from a wedding reception in 2019, and it makes me chuckle every time I see it. A bridesmaid/mom in a moment with the four junior bridesmaids, wherein the youngest is staging some type of revolt against the rest of them. The gestures and facial expressions get me, but then I appreciate the framing, lighting, and shapes captured in the image. It’s a fly-on-the-wall moment.
I like to say I ‘document’ weddings. It makes the most sense as to how I approach photographing them. Yes, portraits — couple, family and otherwise — are a significant part of the day. But the in-between times, the fleeting little moments throughout a wedding day, help color the memory of it all (although, ironically, I think they look best in black-and-white).
It’s the calm father getting primped by his three daughters in the chaos before the ceremony, or a group of ladies touching up the bride before her intro. It’s the bride whisking down the stairs past a painting that almost matches her, or the couple enjoying a moment of quiet together on a bench during the reception. Nothing staged, nothing posed. Just a record of the day that was.
Let me know if I can document your wedding day.
